 Healthy Weight & Your Child is an evidence-based program that aims to empower families through education, healthy eating and physical activity to elicit positive change. Our goal is to help you learn skills and behaviors for living a healthier lifestyle.

Healthy Weight and Your Child engages the whole family, so together they can understand how the home environment and other factors influence the choices that lead to a healthy weight.

Studies have shown that the program is cost-efficient and effective in reducing a child’s body mass index and waist circumference, reducing sedentary behaviors, increasing physical activity and improving self-esteem.

Does Your Child Qualify?
In order to qualify for participation in the Healthy Weight and Your Child Program:

  • Child must be 7-13 years old
  • Child must carry excess weight, with a body mass index (BMI) of the 95th percentile or higher
  • Child must receive clearance from a healthcare provider or school nurse to participate in physical activity
  • Parent/caregiver must attend all sessions

About the Program
Healthy Weight and Your Child is a one year, 25-session evidence-based program for children with obesity. The program empowers 7-13 year olds, with the support of their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The program includes a Family Information Session, 16 weekly sessions, followed by 4 biweekly sessions, and 5 monthly sessions.

Made up of groups of 10-15 children and their parent/caregiver, the program creates a safe, fun, and active environment for children and their families to explore and adopt proven methods to living a healthier lifestyle.

The program is delivered by two trained leaders: A Content Leader who delivers the education and nutrition portions of the program; and an Activity Leader who leads exercises safely for children with obesity.

Program StructureHWYC_Sessions

Families will work with the trained Leaders for the duration of the 25-session program. During this time, children and an adult will learn about topics, including:

  • Healthy eating
  • Physical activity
  • Portion control
  • Internal and external triggers
  • Food label reading
  • Goal setting and rewards
