Healthy Weight and Your Child engages the whole family, so together they can understand how the home environment and other factors influence the choices that lead to a healthy weight.

Developed by leading child health and weight management specialists using the best available evidence and clinical and government guidelines, our Healthy Weight and Your Child Program engages families in education, healthy eating and physical activity to help families achieve a healthy weight and lifestyle together.

Studies have shown that the program is cost-efficient and effective in reducing a child’s body mass index and waist circumference, reducing sedentary behaviors, increasing physical activity and improving self-esteem.

Does Your Child Qualify?

In order to qualify for participation in the Healthy Weight and Your Child Program:

  • Child must be 7-13 years old
  • Child must carry excess weight, with a body mass index (BMI) of the 95th percentile or higher
  • Child must receive clearance from a healthcare provider or school nurse to participate in physical activity
  • Parent/caregiver must attend all sessions

About the Program

Healthy Weight and Your Child is a 4 month, 25 session evidence-based program for children with obesity. The program empowers 7-13 year olds, with the support of their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle.

Made up of groups of 10-15 children and their parent/caregiver, the program creates a safe, fun, and active environment for children and their families to explore and adopt proven methods to living a healthier lifestyle.

The program is delivered by two trained leaders: A Content Leader who delivers the education and nutrition portions of the program; and an Activity Leader who leads exercises safely for children with obesity.

Program Structure

Families will work with the trained Leaders for the duration of the 25-session program. During this time, children and an adult will learn about topics, including:

  • Healthy eating
  • Physical activity
  • Portion control
  • Internal and external triggers
  • Food label reading
  • Goal setting and rewards
